Skincare Routine Adjustments You Need To Make When Spending More Time Indoors
The new normal lifestyle means we’re all spending more time indoors and so, it can be tempting to get careless with our skincare routine too. We tend to be more disciplined in following our skincare routines when we have to leave the house.
However, it’s all too easy to skip some steps of our routine without realizing the damage to the skin that builds up over time.
We’ve made a list of adjustments and parts of your skincare regimen that you shouldn’t stop doing when while spending more time indoors.
Here are top five adjustments to make:
1. Pamper your Under Eye Area
Even if you’re staying more indoors, you cannot neglect pampering your under-eye area, considering how sensitive it is to dark circles, wrinkles, and eye bags. You must give it equal attention even when staying at home and likely spending more time looking at a screen, which can lead to more pronounced dark circles and puffiness. Taking proper care of your under-eye area will help keep the puffiness away and your eyes looking clear and bright.
2. Don’t Stop Using Your SUNSCREEN
Dermatologists strongly advise people to continue using the same broad-spectrum sun protection while staying indoors as they do when they head out. First of all, UV rays do not harm your skin only when outdoors but can also penetrate through the window glass in your home. This means that UV-related skin risks such as premature ageing and blemishes are present indoors too.
In fact, it is a good idea to switch focus on a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays, rather than an “SPF only” product as SPF only protects you against UVB rays.
3. Maintain an Active Lifestyle
Staying indoors mostly has undoubtedly made us lazy but do you know this is taking a toll on our skin health? If you’re not exercising as much as you were before, then you’re causing circulation to your skin to slow down. This can lead to dull and dry skin as blood carries oxygen and important nutrients throughout the body and skin.
It also serves as a means to remove free radicals and other waste materials building up in your skin. To prevent that from happening and ultimately dulling your complexion, it is best to exercise daily and sufficiently, even if indoors to help keep the glow on your skin and to stay healthy overall.
4. Use a Soap-Free Gentle Wash
Now that you’re not using as much makeup or facing as much pollution when going out of the home, you could trade your regular face wash for a milder, soap-free one. At the same time, just because you feel that your skin is acquiring less grit and dirt, you shouldn’t be skipping the twice-daily face cleansing session.
You can skip your rigorous makeup removal, grit cleansing steps but you still need to cleanse your skin twice daily. Gentle wash products will be suitable for your lifestyle currently and effectively nourish your skin too. Gentle cleansers give you just the sort of uncomplicated cleaning you need to protect your skin without causing any unnecessary irritation, dryness or tightness.
5. Moisturize More
Many of us often fall prey to the illusion that we do not need to moisturise our skin too much when staying indoors. The fact is that over exposure to air-conditioning could be drying your skin out even more and this is a common cause of dry or flaking skin.
The continuous re-circulating of dry air inside an enclosed space depletes the moisture from our skin. This is why many people commonly develop rashes, dry skin and even eczema when staying indoors for prolonged periods of time.
Therefore, it is highly important that you moisturise your skin even more to minimize the damage from over exposure to air-conditioning. You should keep a good moisturizer in stock and you may also want to increase your daily intake of water to rehydrate your body sufficiently and prevent your skin from drying out and cracking.
Final Thoughts
When we don’t have to battle pollution and sun on a daily basis, we think our skin will finally turn amazing. The fact is that skincare routine at home is just as essential and we cannot be careless in any way if we want it to continue looking radiant, glowing and hydrated. Spending more time at home could cause a drastic change in the air quality, activity levels, mental health and our diets. All of these have a major impact on our skin. Hence, a few changes in skincare adjustment will ensure your indoor-focused lifestyle is benefitting your skin and not vice-versa.
